Our story isn't just about hospitality; it’s about our family’s lifelong obsession with the African bush and our dream of sharing that "golden hour" glow with the world. ​

A Family Legacy, Reimagined ​It all started with a simple bond between a South African father and daughter. For Johan and Kayla, the Kruger has always been a sanctuary—a place of quiet sunrises, the thrill of the wild, and the crackle of a campfire. We knew we couldn't keep this piece of heaven to ourselves, so driven by that shared passion, we decided to open 56@Crocodile: a place where the wild feels like home.

​From Germany to the Lowveld ​

Our journey took a bit of a detour! After living in Germany for several years, we didn’t just bring back memories—we brought back a new member of the family. Kayla met Niclas, a true German at heart, and convinced him to trade the Rhine for the Crocodile River. ​It didn't take long for the Kruger magic to work its charms. Today, Niclas is a fully converted "Kruger lover" and a vital member of our team. Together, the three of us blend warm South African hospitality with a touch of international flair to ensure every guest feels like part of our family. ​

We chose our location for one reason: The View. ​When we say we are on the doorstep of the park, we mean it. Whether you’re sipping your morning coffee or enjoying a sunset drink, the sights and sounds of the Kruger National Park are right in front of you. ​

Johan

The Visionary | Owner & General Manager

Johan is the heart of the business. With his lifelong love for Kruger National Park, he was the driving force behind making this dream a reality. If the lodge looks spectacular, it's because Johan personally oversaw the entire renovation – and he's not afraid to get his hands dirty to ensure everything is perfect for our guests.


  • Kruger habit: You can find him in the park at daybreak, enjoying the morning stillness.
  • In his free time: When he is not managing the lodge, he enjoys a relaxing round of golf or the simple perfection of an evening by a crackling bushfire.


Kayla

The Creative | Amateur Interior Designer & Hospitality Manager

Kayla, the daughter of our founding partner. Her mission is to ensure you feel the warmth of home from the moment you arrive. She has designed our premises to reflect the beauty of our surroundings, while making every guest feel completely pampered.


  • Kruger habit: No early morning game drive is complete without her “safari fuel” – a hot cup of tea and a biscuit while she scan the horizon for lions.
  • In her free time: She is always up for a chat about your sightings of the day and is currently (bravely) learning to play golf so she can keep up with the men!


Niclas

The tech-savvy guide | Marketing Manager & International Liaison

Niclas brings "German precision" and international flair to our South African roots. He originally came as a visitor and is now a passionate Kruger enthusiast. As our IT manager, he keeps us connected to the world – and our customers.


  • Kruger habit: He has developed a sixth sense for the wilderness – Niclas always knows the “good roads” and hidden side paths for the best animal sightings.
  • In his free time: As a serious golf enthusiast, Niclas has already won several amateur tournaments in Germany – so he is the one to beat on the local courses!
